I am new to SharePoint & WSS 3.0. I recently setup a test MOSS 2007 server and site (XXX) and a WSS 3.0 server and site (YYY), then tried moving a site from the MOSS to WSS using stsadm -backup/restore. I was testing the capabilities and problems we would encounter from a catastrophic event. It worked great and everything moved to the new server. I was able to backup from site XXX (MOSS) and restore to site YYY (WSS). Even though my site was using a different DNS name it appeared to work.
All the permissions followed but I have noticed one thing: my email alerts still worked and I was able to create new alerts. However, the site URL in the email alert was still pointing to the original site, not my new site.

I have not tried the import/export feature but will be testing that feature later this week. Any idea how I can get my email alerts point to my new site?

Hey Phil, try a google for moving sharepoint content databases. I believe that's currently the easiest way to do it. The only downside is that you'll have to recreate your configuration, central admin and ssp databases.
